What is the best time to visit Sammed Shikharji?
The ideal time for the yatra is from October to March, as the weather is cooler and more pleasant for trekking. Avoid the summer months (April to June) due to extreme heat and monsoon months (July to September) due to heavy rainfall.
How long does the trek take?
The trek to the top of Sammed Shikharji and back takes approximately 8-10 hours. It's about 18 km one way. This duration depends on your walking speed and how much time you spend at each Tonk (shrine).
What is the level of difficulty of the trek?
The trek is moderately challenging due to the distance and the hilly terrain. There are some steep sections, so it is advisable to be in reasonable physical condition before undertaking the yatra. Pilgrims can opt for dolis if they cannot walk the full distance.
Are there food and accommodation facilities available?
Yes, Dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses) in Madhuban and near the top provide basic vegetarian meals and clean accommodations. It is recommended to book in advance during peak seasons. The meals are simple, following Jain dietary guidelines.
Can children and the elderly participate in the yatra?
Yes, many families, including children and the elderly, participate in the yatra. However, the trek can be physically demanding, so it's important to assess their physical ability. For those unable to trek, dolis (palanquins) can be hired.
What are dolis (palanquin), and how much do they cost?
Dolis or palanquins carried by bearers for those who cannot complete the trek on foot. The cost for dolis can range between INR 6,000 - 10,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and the number of tonks you cover.
How do I reach Sammed Shikharji?
By Air: The nearest airport is Deogarh (approx. 105 km away), or Ranchi (approx. 180 km away).
By Train: The nearest railway station is Parasnath (about 25 km from Madhuban).
By Road: Regular buses and taxis operate from major cities like Giridih, Dhanbad, and Ranchi.
Can non-Jains participate in the yatra?
While Sammed Shikharji is a Jain pilgrimage site, people of all faiths are welcome to visit, provided they respect the sanctity of the site and adhere to the rules of the temple.
